My Story
Why did you decide to join AWA?
I was in an abusive relationship for many years, after I decided to walk away when it crossed over into being physical, the abuse didn’t stop. I spent years terrified, scared of my own shadow because I didn’t know what was behind it. I joined AWA after taking a concealed carry class and deciding I was ready to take back power in my life.
How has being a member changed your life?
I am growing more confident every day in my abilities to defend and protect myself and my children. I went from having very little experience with a handgun, to knowing that I may not be perfect, but most of my shots will hit my target. I am no longer scared of someone coming up to me, because I have the tools to determine if they are a threat or not. Then I have multiple resources at my disposal to get away safely.
When you look at yourself and your AWA sisters, how would you define “Armed Women of America” not the organization, but the women who so boldly stand with you on the mission to be your own self-protector?
Determined, strong women who are on a mission to protect themselves and others. Women who will help you out if you need it and are always willing to show you something new.
Is there anything else you would like to share?
AWA has become a lifeline for me in a very short time. I am able to encourage other domestic violence survivors and give them some tools to feel more empowered and confident. I tell women all the time they need to look into their local chapter, even if they are not comfortable with carrying, there’s so many other ways of protecting yourself and confidence takes away some of the control of a threat.
